Connection to the National School Social Work Practice Model 2.0: PRACTICE

This course (1 hour Asynchronous Distance Learning) will look at the importance of school social workers in working with unhoused families and services to remove barriers to education. School social workers play a unique role in the lives of students and families experiencing homelessness. Through this session, we will work together to discuss the McKinney-Vento Law and the ways in which school social workers can provide wrap-around services to address not only housing insecurity, but also the social, emotional, and educational concerns associated with being unhoused.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify and increase understanding of the federal McKinney-Vento Law
  2. Participants will discover and recognize the rights afforded to youth and families experiencing homelessness.
  3. Participants will translate McKinney-Vento Law to gain a greater understanding of the ways in which school social workers can address the needs of youths and families experiencing homelessness.
