Racial Justice in Discipline: Empowering School Social Workers to Make it Happen (1.0CE)

Webinar Description:

In this course (1 hour Asynchronous Distance Learning)  will provide school social workers with tools and strategies for helping teachers and school leaders avoid suspending students for behaviors labeled as “disobedience,” “defiance,” or “disruptive.” Suspensions for these behaviors drive persistent racial discipline disparities. The approaches presented are evidence-based, feasible, and can be adapted to meet the needs of specific school contexts.

Learning Goals:

  1. Participants will discover theory- and research-based understanding of how key features of the school and classroom context support or prevent the overuse of suspensions for subjective behaviors.
  2. Participants will identify skills to lead an evidence-based change process starting with assessing disparities and their root causes to evaluating intervention success.
  3. Participants will select from an extensive collection of resources and feasible strategies to motivate colleagues and bring about change in discipline practices at their schools.

Speaker: Natasha K. Bowen, MSW, PhD (she/her)
